Central Division Crowns “Battle of the Boom” Champion
Imagine being so good at your job, they give you a trophy. That’s exactly what happened recently in Oklahoma City, OK, for one skilled boom operator in the GMS family.
As summer gives way to fall, few events are more greatly anticipated within the GMS ranks than the annual “Battle of the Boom”. Pitting the top boom operators from each of the region’s subsidiaries against one another in a quest to name the “best of the best” is a time-honored tradition at GMS. And even though this year’s event may have looked a little different, it was still full of trademark excitement.
And the Winner Is…
Congratulations to Interior Products Supply boom expert Zachary Starks! Zach’s impressive winning time of 4:57 bested second-place finisher (Chris Pope from Nashville) and the rest of the field to earn him a nice trophy, and even nicer bragging rights as this year’s Central Division champion.
Excellence on Display – Today and Every Day
Patterned after the practical exam portion of the ABL (Boom) Operator’s certification exam as set forth by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO), the GMS Battle of the Boom is a competitive event judging operators’ skill at a variety of tasks, including:
- Placing a Test Weight in a Corral
- Blind Picking
- Negotiating a Zig-Zag Corridor
- Placing a Test Weight on a Truck Bed
- Safe Shutdown and Secure Procedures
Emerging as the champion does prove their skill. But for the many co-workers and customers who have gotten to know Zach Starks over his many years working for IPS, no one is surprised.
IPS yard managers report getting compliments all the time about Zach’s ability, professionalism, and excellent service. For Zach, it’s all about working hard to be as efficient as possible and making customers happy while doing it. That attitude is trophy-worthy, and appreciated, every day.
